Detaching from Outcomes: A Lesson from the Bhagavad Gita and Personal Experience

The Bhagavad Gita imparts a profound lesson with the quote “Karmanye Vadhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachana, (कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।)” advocating for working without attachment to outcomes. This wisdom emphasizes that the desire for specific results can be counterproductive and advises us to avoid such expectations whenever possible. These expectations often hinder our full commitment to tasks. However, if we do hold hope or expectation, it should be done within boundaries, and once the work is completed, we must release those expectations. This approach is often the wisest course of action.

A personal incident in my life vividly illustrated the importance of this principle of prioritization and detachment from outcomes. In February 2019, I attended the CCIVA 2019 conference at IIT Kharagpur, immediately after completing my PhD. I had the privilege of delivering a presentation during the event, which garnered significant acclaim.

My presentation was scheduled on the conference’s final day, with the prize distribution ceremony following shortly after. Encouraged by the positive feedback I had received, many anticipated that I would secure a prize in my session. After concluding my presentation and participating in the session, my original plan was to leave immediately for Kolkata, where my girlfriend resided (a train journey of approximately 2.5 hours from Kharagpur). My session ended around 3 pm, and I had the opportunity to catch a train at 3:30 pm, ensuring I would arrive in Kolkata by 6 pm, allowing for an entire evening together.

However, the allure of potential recognition and the greed for the prize caused me to change my plans. I decided to stay until the end of the conference, which ultimately wrapped up at 8 pm, and to my disappointment, I did not receive the prize I had hoped for. It was a moment of realization when I understood the foolishness of my decision. I had missed both opportunities: spending the evening with my girlfriend and leaving the conference empty-handed. In essence, I ended up losing on both fronts that day.

This experience underscores the importance of prioritizing and relinquishing expectations once a task is accomplished. We should not waver in our decisions for the sake of minor prizes or fleeting desires. While there are instances where waiting for an outcome may have a significant impact on our future, in this particular case, it would not have made a substantial difference aside from a fleeting moment of joy.

In conclusion, the Bhagavad Gita’s teachings resonate deeply with the incident in my life. Prioritizing what truly matters and releasing expectations after completing a task allows us to embrace life’s journey with equanimity.  It serves as a poignant reminder that, at times, the pursuit of recognition and attachment to specific outcomes can divert us from what is most vital.
