Unlocking Life’s True Freedom

A Perspective on Societal Expectations
Society, particularly the middle-class Indian family, often imparts the idea that as we grow older, we should confine ourselves within certain predefined boundaries. However, the true aim of life should be to liberate ourselves from various constraints, encompassing financial, emotional, and internal aspects.
As we age, we are often encouraged to settle quickly by securing a job. Once employed, we are urged to acquire a house, get married, raise children, and so forth. What often escapes our notice is that these milestones, while deemed markers of success, can inadvertently lead us away from true freedom and confine us within a metaphorical cage. Starting with a job, a sense of stability can sometimes limit our personal and professional growth, rendering us as mere passengers in our own lives (specifically for govt. jobs), rather than the drivers. This marks the initial step toward this metaphorical confinement.
Furthermore, societal and financial pressures often compel us to purchase a house. This act, however, distances us from financial independence and mental freedom. We may acquire a house through a loan which obligates us to EMIs for the next two decades. While a stable job might make these payments manageable, it also reduces our risk-taking capacity. The psychological burden of these EMIs can be stifling, hampering our ability to explore new opportunities. This cycle continues with other financial responsibilities, such as car purchases and child education, gradually eroding our financial and personal freedom if not approached thoughtfully.
Owning a home is undoubtedly a significant achievement, but equally crucial is enjoying peace of mind. Ideally, one should strive to strike a balance between the two. If the weight of EMIs hampers personal growth, it becomes imperative to reevaluate priorities. This principle extends to various aspects of our lives
However, it is neither logical nor practical to indefinitely postpone our desires to the point where we can no longer savor life’s pleasures. Ultimately, the key lies in finding the right equilibrium between our aspirations and their timing. Our overarching objective should be to attain true freedom, and this can be achieved by crafting a life path that balances our desires with the pursuit of genuine liberation.
